Leaving Konz we made a short detour up the Saar to Saarburg
Day 1 Konz to Saarburg 1 lock 11 kms

The town is dominated by and owes its existence to the now ruined castle of Schlossbergring.
The river Leuk bisects the town, before joining the Saar. This river was redirected in the 13th century and today makes a spectacular drop of 60 feet before it meets the larger Saar.

We had been in wine country for nearly a week now, but had not had an opportunity to taste some of the local produce. But that problem was addressed in Saarburg!
Riesling is a traditionally a sweet wine and really not to my taste. It seems that a majority of wine drinkers prefer a drier wine and most wineries now offer a trocken or dry wine. But be careful, some of the trocken wine is still quite sweet.

After this short detour it was back to the Moselle as we followed this meandering river to its confluence with the Rhine.
